Video recording best practices

While we all hope that entirely virtual school days number, the video will most likely continue to be widely used for presentations, meetings, and even on inclement weather days, here are some tips on how to improve your videos and audio from your devices, even if you are on a budget.

For the best lighting, place your desk in front of a window whenever possible. Natural light makes your face look bright and clear it also increases video quality by reducing pixelation. Be careful not to sit with a window behind you, as it will add too much light and give you a dark silhouette.

While your computer’s internal microphone is sufficient for audio, using good headphones with an internal microphone will make the audio much clearer and more powerful. Headphones should work with any method with a headphone jack, such as tablets, laptops, computers, and smartphones. Do your best to eliminate background noise so that the microphone can focus only on your voice. Household items like air conditioners, refrigerators, or even jewelry can create additional background noise, so it’s good to be aware of your surroundings.

If your school district has lavalier microphones available or has budgetary space to purchase them, they will provide professional audio. They are also great for meetings and podcasts. This microphone can be connected to a smartphone, DSLR camera, and Mac and Windows computers, making it an affordable and versatile option.

Minimize blue light

Have you ever had an eyestrain or a headache from staring at the computer for too long? Blue light may be the culprit.

The sun naturally releases blue light during the day to keep us awake. But too much simulated blue light from our computers, laptops, phones, and other devices can cause sleep disturbances and eyestrain. Also, the circadian rhythm, the body’s internal clock, can become unbalanced. Here are some ways you can get back to sleep and ease discomfort.

To adjust the color temperature and decrease blue light on your Windows strategies, select Start> Settings> System> Display> Night Light Settings. Under Schedule, set the Night Light Schedule option to On. You can choose your custom hours or click the Dusk to Dawn option. Please note that the night light is not available for devices with DisplayLink or Basic Display controllers.

To adjust these settings on your Mac, you can use Night Shift. Just go to System Preferences> Displays> Night Shift. You can then choose your shade and set a practice schedule.

Since blue light approaches the sun, too much light at night will tell your body that it is still daytime. You can enable dark mode, night light, or night shift on your tablet or mobile device by going to the display settings. Setting your device to a warmer tone a few hours before bed can help you relax and get ready for sleep.

Delay email delivery in Outlook

Did you know that you can delay delivering your emails in Outlook on the web (OWA)? If you tend to work late at night or early in the morning, waiting for your message will ensure that your recipient does not hear the doorbell early in the morning. When your recipient is out of the office, planning an important message to send when they return will put it high on your priority list.

After you’ve finished composing your email, click the down arrow next to the Send button in Outlook on the web. You can then click Send Later and choose the time and day you want the email to remain sent. You can view your arranged emails in the Drafts folder.
